More soldiers deployed to quell fighting between Twic, Abyei youths

More South Sudan People’s Defense Forces from Juba have been deployed in Twic County to quell the violence that left at least 15 people dead and 9 wounded last week.

The security forces deployed on Tuesday will be based in Athony and Madou areas.

According to the acting Commissioner in Twic County, the orders for the forces are to prevent further attacks between armed youth in Twic and Abyei.

There have been armed clashes between communities in Twic and Abyei areas leading to deaths and destruction of properties.

“Fighting has affected many things in the life of the community, now there is no free movement on the road, vehicles are ambushed and looted, so to prevent all that, the government need to do what it can,” Commissioner Malek Ring Makuei said.

He reiterated his call to the youths to stop fighting and allow the government to find solutions to the conflict.

Last week, fresh fighting erupted in Mading Achueng village, leaving 15 people dead and 9 others wounded on both sides.

The Fighting between Twic and Abyei youth begun in February 2022 reportedly over a disputed land.

In May, the fact finding committee formed by the President recommended the arrest of four government officials accused of inciting violence between Twic and Abyei communities.
