Man held over robbery, murder in Twic

Police are holding a suspected robber in connection with the death of a 38-year-old-woman in Twic County, Warrap State.

Atem Ayuel Ring, 32, is accused of Adut Malek Kuot on Mayen Abun-Than-tok road at the weekend.

The victim was returning on foot from the market when Ayuel and unidentified accomplices attacked her.

According to police, the men committed the act in the process of robbing Ms Malek of shopping, including a handbag and a smartphone.

“The suspects hit the deceased on the neck with a stick, seriously injuring her. She died hours later at a health facility in Mayen Abun,” brigadier General Marko Mawien, county police inspector.

He said Ayuel confessed to attacking Adut Malek, but claimed they did it under the influence of alcohol.

The suspect is being held at the Turalei police station, awaiting investigation and subsequent appearance in court.

Atem Ayuel is likely to be charged with culpable homicide, which the South Sudan Penal Code 2008 defines as causing the death to a person by negligently failing to realize that death may result  his action.

“…upon conviction, shall be sentenced to imprisonment for life or for any lesser term or with a fine or with both,” reads Article 210 (1).
