Low chicken price causes Aweil West County man's death

Police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are looking into the death of a 35-year-old man who killed himself, according to reports, after his wife sold two chickens for a price he thought was too low.

The incident occurred in Riangbar village, Aweil West County, on Wednesday afternoon.

The unnamed spouse sold both chickens for 15,000 South Sudanese pounds (about $4) at Nyamlel market on Tuesday.

The police preliminary investigations suggest that the woman sold the chickens to cover the medical expenses of their sick child.

This angered Deng Noon Tong, who claimed that the chickens were worth more, according to a local police investigator.

"Tong had been quarreling with his wife since yesterday [Tuesday], when she sold two chickens very cheaply," Lt.-Col. Philip Agany Thiep told Akol Yam FM on Wednesday.

Following a heated argument with his wife, he reportedly decided to end his life.

“When he was stopped from beating up the woman, he first decided to kill himself using spear, but it was taken away from him,” Agany explained.

“Then in the afternoon, he took a rope and hanged himself in the nearby bush.”

Agany appealed to residents to avoid resorting to violence when dealing with disagreements.

He further stated that he will launch legal action against the woman to obtain more details about the incident.
