Leer FM praised for impact as Norbuor gets healthcare

Residents of Norbuor Payam in Koch County, Unity State, are celebrating the arrival of essential medicines and the opening of a new primary healthcare unit.

This comes after years of being cut off from critical healthcare services due to the area's remoteness and lack of road accessibility.

John Gai Kurjok, leader of the team from Koch County Health Department said the much-needed consignment of drugs to Norbuor was delivered for the first time in three years.

“We brought three types of medications, which are 3 cartons of antimalaria drugs, 4 cartons of Amoxicillin, and 4 cartons of diarrhea drugs. There are an estimated 160 households in the payam headquarters alone, plus the other population of Norbuor payam,” Kujok said.

The delivery is praised by residents who had long lacked access to basic drugs due to the area's isolation.

Community members expressed deep appreciation for Leer FM, whose coverage of their struggles played an important role in raising awareness. Several residents, speaking to Leer FM, emphasized how the radio station's reporting helped draw attention to their cry, leading to the CHD's intervention.

“We appreciate Leer FM for passing our voice raising complaining to the Koch authority over the lack of medical health facility, that is why the authority has brought medication to our area, we used to travel by boats to seek medications in very far places,” said Chuol Gatluak Rout.

Other residents, like Panyang Dak, shared their relief as the community saying, “We are very happy to receive medication. We previously used to go very far distance like Jaguar, Thaker, Maper Rupkuay, Gany and Patit.”

“It is good for us as community members since we previously used to travel by boats to Patit Gany, Rupkuay Thaker, and Jaguar but now we have our health facility at our location. We are very joy for having a health facility in our area,” Kuth Kouk Nhial explained.

Norbuor Payam, located in the southern part of Koch County and bordering Mayendit County, has long been isolated from essential services. The lack of infrastructure and roads has left residents without reliable access to healthcare, forcing them to travel long distances for medical attention.

With the opening of the primary healthcare unit and the arrival of critical medicines, Norbuor’s residents can now receive the care they urgently need. The residents applaud the role Leer FM played in bringing attention to their situation.
