Lack of blood; Obstacle to saving lives of patients in Aweil hospital

As the globe celebrates the Nurses week, Nurses and Midwives in Aweil have complained that lack of blood is a major challenge they are facing to save the lives of expectant mothers and patients.

They made the concern during the celebration of International Nurses Day at Aweil State hospital.

Nurses Day is an international day observed around the world on 12 May each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society.

The national theme this year 2023 is celebrated under the theme’ Nurses/Medicine; together from evidence based to reality”.

Joseph Kiir Madut Aluk is a midwife, he calls on the community to voluntarily give blood and save lives of patients.

He says most pregnant women during delivery die because there is no blood donor to rescue them.

“During delivery times, we  [Nurses & Midwives] are always faced with challenge of lack of blood in the hospital and this hurt us so much for there is nothing we can do save life if there is no blood. We call upon the public to donate blood to save lives of anemic patients including expectant mothers. We also call upon blood bank  to intervene on such situations,”

Some of community members who attended the event argued that it is important for the public to donate blood to save life.

They said having  been retold on the importance of donating blood, they will now as public ensure that they donate blood.

“It is very important for us to donate blood to save the lives of those in need of blood because if we don’t then no one will help our community or sisters from dying due to blood shortage”.

“since we have been reminded today, we are going to try our best to donate blood and see if we can help those at the hospital and in need of blood transfusion, so from here we are going to check and see if we are free to give them blood”.

In December 2022, the administration of Aweil State Hospital said it is concerned by lack of blood to save the lives of patients with emergency cases.
