President Salva Kiir Mayardit urged the people of Ruweng to
embrace reconciliation as he swore in Stefano Wieu Mialek as the new Chief
Administrator of the Ruweng Administrative Area on Monday.
Wieu’s appointment follows a presidential decree issued last
Friday, which sees him replace Tiop De Monyluak in the role.
The ceremony comes at a time of heightened urgency for
peace, as Ruweng has been grappling with the aftermath of a violent attack last
week.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday, armed youths from Unity State
attacked Abiemnhom County, leaving 37 people dead on both sides, including two
women and a 3-year-old child, and 22 others injured.
The violence displaced over 13,000 people, many seeking
refuge in Twic County of Warrap State, where they face a dire need for basic
services.
In his address, President Kiir urged the people of Ruweng to
embrace peace and unity, emphasizing the need to end hostilities for long-term
stability.
“The President called on citizens to reject violence and
work together to foster stability and development across South Sudan,” said
David Amour, Press Secretary in the office of the president.
Stefano Wieu Mialek, pledged to collaborate closely with
Unity State authorities to restore law and order in the region.
“He also promised to focus on developmental projects and address pressing challenges facing the area,” the press secretary stated.
