Kapoeta man kills brother over chicken

A Kapoeta man is on the run from Eastern Equatoria State authorities after he shot dead his brother over a hen at the weekend.

The incident happened at Napetet in Katiko Payam in Kapoeta South County at 7.00am on Sunday, according to the county executive director.

Justin Juma says the two brothers – Joseph and Lochin Itaa – were intoxicated when a quarrel over the hen ensued.

The hen had just hatched a number of chicks, which Joseph, 25, suggested they be shared equally when they mature.

In the heat of the moment, Joseph, grabbed a gun and shot Lochin, killing him instantly.

“[Joseph] suggested they should divide the chickens when they become mature, but Joseph refused. After he was hit with a stick, Joseph picked his gun and shot dead his brother,” Juma told TRC on Monday.

The suspect, Juma said, then ran away. But he said the police and traditional leaders were looking for Joseph.

“We have ordered the chiefs to look around for this man in order to be arrested for taking law into his own hands,” he added.

Efforts to reach family members of the deceased were not immediately successful.
