Kapoeta East County raises alarm over looming hunger

Authorities in Kapoeta East County have warned of looming hunger in Lotiyan Payam in Eastern Equatoria state.

They said crops have failed this year due to prolonged drought. The area has not experienced enough rainfall this year.

According to the Executive Director of Lotiyan Payam, the areas that will experience hunger include; Lotiyan, Mogos, Lochoa, Moruarengan, Napustiria, Jie and Kaatonguni.

Aurelio Lorot Anjeo said there is high cases of malnutrition among children. He appealed to humanitarian partners to intervene.

“Many farms have been destroyed by sunshine. I am appealing to humanitarian partners and the government to come and assess the area,” he said.

Mr. Lorot said the situation will force people to migrate to neighboring areas in search of food and pasture for their animals.

Jino Odu Mark, Acting Director General at the State Ministry of Agriculture said the problem is persistent across the state.

“This is a general situation. Everywhere is drying up, all the crops are drying up –  even near our office here,” he state.

Mr. Odu mentioned that the County government will coordinate with aid agencies to find ways of intervention.
