The local authorities in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State, say the cattle herders from Jonglei State and the Acholi community have agreed to evacuate the area within three days.

The agreement, overseen by the Magwi County government, was reached last Friday and is expected to conclude this Monday evening.

On Thursday last week, the state security committee, led by the state governor, visited Magwi to assess the influx of Dinka Bor cattle herders in Nyolo Boma of Agoro Payam and Iwire Payam.

The host community had reported incidents of intimidation and damage to farms, which could lead to food insecurity in the area.

According to the head chief of the area, Okot Sonic said the host community rejected the proposal for compensation for the crop damage caused by the approximately 15,000 heads of cattle; instead, they demanded the immediate evacuation of the herders and their cattle.

“The three days were requested by the county commissioner, but the community initially gave them only two days,” Okot stated.

“Later, because the community is under government authority, they accepted the proposal of the additional day.”

The chief stated that the herders began evacuating their children and women yesterday, as the deadline approaches this Monday evening.

However, he noted that there has been no significant movement of the cattle from the area as of Monday morning.
