Home birth kills Aweil mother

A health official in Northern Bahr el Ghazal has urged expectant mothers to use prenatal care services in the area.

The call comes days after a mother who have birth at home succumbed to severe bleeding on Saturday.

Prenatal care is the health care you get while you are pregnant. It includes your checkups and prenatal testing.

Prenatal care can help keep you and your baby healthy, health experts say.

It lets your health care provider spot health problems early. Early treatment, they argue, can cure many problems and prevent others.

On Saturday, Abuk Wek, 38 — who had just gave birth to twins — reportedly died while being rushed to the Nyamlel Primary Health Care Center.

“When we tried to transfer her to Aweil, she couldn’t reach the hospital,” Lual Kamis Lual, manager at the public health facility, told Akol Yam FM.

“I am calling on our people to stop delaying mothers on labor at home for their safety.”

This wasn’t the first time a mother lost life during childbirth in the state.

In 2022, two mothers died during child births at Malual Baai Primary Health Care Center in Aweil East County.
