A herder was reportedly killed, and 25 cows were raided at Bar-rantok cattle camp in Rumbek Center County on Sunday evening.

The police spokesperson in Lakes State identified the deceased herder as Malook Bol Riak, aged 40.

“Raiders shot and killed a herder and made away with 25 cows,” Maj. Elijah Mabor confirmed.

He claimed the raiders came from Cueibet County, an allegation Mingkaman FM could not immediately ascertain.

“These suspects are believed to be from Abiriu Payam of Cueibet County, and the security forces were alerted,” he said.

“However, no arrests have been made so far as a joint security force is still following them.”

Cattle raiding is the major cause of conflict among pastoralist communities across South Sudan.

Officials attribute it to presence of firearms in the hands of civilians and high bride price demands.
