A university student was fatally shot in Cueibet County on Tuesday night, according to a Lakes State police official.

Matur Pandok Nyiech was a third-year student at the University of Juba's College of Social and Economic Studies.

“We got a call... that a young man had been shot dead, and the criminal fled the scene immediately without being recognized,” Maj. Elijah Mabor told Mingkaman 100 FM on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was killed while weeding his crops at Abiriu Payam. He would also teach at Abyei-chok Primary School every time he visited the area.

The motive for his killing is unknown, but Maj. Mabor said police would carry out an investigation into the incident as soon as possible.

“Until now, the police are still searching for the perpetrators," the police spokesperson stated.

He urged the residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing information that could lead to the culprit's arrest.

In April, two local farmers were killed on their farms in Rumbek East County. However, authorities have not yet made any arrests.
