Gun-wielding civilians banned from plying Twic-Abyei road

No civilian carrying firearm will be allowed to travel along the Twic-Abyei highway, the army in Warrap state has ordered.

This was disclosed by the State Minster of Youth, Culture and Sport.

According to Agok Ayaar Chieny, any unauthorized individual found carrying firearm along the route will be disarmed and arrested.

“From Wunrok to Athoony area nothing is needed there. If you are found there you can be considered as those who rob goods – just because of carrying gun on the road,” he said, adding that “If you want to go with your gun, then move away from the main road.”

The government recently deployed SSPDF soldiers in Twic to address the looting of commercial vehicles along Twic – Abyei road by suspected armed youth.

This month, armed civilians ambushed a military convoy in Twic and drove away with three army vehicles. The landcruisers mounted with machine guns were later recovered and handed over to the SSPDF on July 19.

The order to disarm and arrest armed civilians along the highway was reportedly issued last week during a meeting between the Commander of SSPDF and community leaders in Nyin Deng Ayuel.
