Four chiefs arrested over violent land dispute in Aweil West

Four local chiefs have been arrested following violence over communal land in Aweil West County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

The clashes between locals in Gum-Juer West and Chimel center led to the injury of at least 4 people on July 15.

“We have arrested these people so that we can cool down the situation, and we are still following it up,” said Brigadier Lual Diing Wol, Police Chief Inspector in Aweil West County.

The land in question is said to have been a point of contention between the two communities since 2007.

Last month, some of the Payam Administrators in Aweil West rejected attempts by the County Commissioner to change locations for Payam headquarters.
