The transit route from Bor to Panyagoor town was
devastated by flash floods last week, resulting in a scarcity of food and
medical supplies for the 126,930 people of Twic East County, according to
authorities.
The acting County Commissioner, Elijah Manyok Ayii, said
the road between the two counties became unreachable as the culverts installed
at Pageny and Kuer Achuoth roads were broken by heavy flow.
It says the supplies of food commodities by the traders
have paused.
Health facilities also ran shortage of medicines and the
humanitarians’ relief food aids meant for the IDPs in the county was also cut.
“We are cut off from Bor County. We are not receiving any
supplies as per now - either food or drugs,” Manyok told Mingkaman FM via phone
from Panyagor.
However, he said residents are managing the little food
items in the stores and the few remaining medical supplies; however, they will
soon finish if no interventions are made.
The flash floods, according to the official, damaged a
culvert, which was key during the rainy season.
For his part, Jonglei State Minister for Road and Bridges,
Joseph Mawich, promised to engage the World Food Program to have the broken
culverts repaired.
“We are making the coordination and with the WFP and
hopefully within this week, am sure it will be fixed,” Mawich stressed.
The road connecting Bor town to Twic East County was constructed early this year by the Jonglei State ministry of roads and bridges with support from WFP.
According to the 2008 census, the population of Twic East stands at 83, 349.
