End violence against women, girls, NBGS men told

The deputy governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal has urged the public to end domestic violence against women and girls.

Tong Lual Ayat made the remarks during the launch of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in the state capital, Aweil town, on Friday.

Domestic violence is violence committed by someone in the victim’s domestic circle. It includes physical fighting, sexual abuse, emotional, economic, psychological and others.

There have been cases of violence against women and girls in the state, some of which led to deaths.

Lual says killing of women and girls is a bad act and people should stop it.

“Respect the rights of women and girls across the state and avoid committing crimes such as killing of women. I urge the laws makers to take note of such crimes for accountability,” he said at the event attended by hundreds of residents.

Meanwhile, some residents told Akol Yam FM that economic situation is the major cause of family disputes.

According to them, to address family disputes there is a need to empower women economically so that things like this are avoided.

From September to November 2023, the state government recorded several cases of violence against women and girls.
