A discarded hand grenade explosion in Malual Centre Payam, Aweil North County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, has killed a 12-year-old boy named Ngor and left another 8-year-old Ngor injured.

According to Aweil North County Commissioner Kiir Chan Wol, the children found the grenade discarded by the edge of a water pond in Kootic village on Sunday morning. They began playing with the device by striking it with a stick, which caused it to explode.

“It was on Sunday when the children left home, and they found an old hand grenade damped at the bank of a water pond. They started beating with stick causing it to explode killing Ngor instantly and left another Ngor seriously injured in the hand. The injured is now being treated at the hospital,” Chan told Akol Yam FM.

Chan urged those responsible for handling explosive devices to ensure they are properly disposed of and kept out of reach of children to prevent such tragic accidents.
