A fisherman who disappeared in a river in Nyamlel has been found dead, authorities have said.
The 26-year-old man had gone fishing using a local canoe on Wednesday evening in Aweil West County but never returned home.
The authorities, family members, and the community launched a search and rescue effort along the river but were not able to trace his whereabouts.
But on Friday afternoon, police said the body of the young man was found.
“Since many peoples joined in to search at the river bank, we managed to recover his body near Nyamlel Bridge,” said Akok Nyang Akok, the County Police Director.
Last week, the State Ministry of Animals Resources and Fisheries temporarily banned fishing in Northern Bahr el Ghazal until October 2022 to allow fish to mature.
Mr. Nyang urged fishermen to work in groups and avoid fishing in the evening.
“To our colleagues who are depending fishing, go to the river as a team to help each other when there is disaster.”
