Ten SSPDF soldiers were killed, two wounded, and five
others are missing in a road ambush along the Madol-Mayendit County road, police
have confirmed.
Mayendit is in Unity State, while Madol is an area in
Lakes State.
According to police Lakes State, traders from Mayendit
had traveled to Rumbek Center County to purchase market commodities.
On their way back, the soldiers had to offer them security escort,
but later fell into the ambush.
Maj. Makur Kucdit, deputy inspector of police in Rumbek
North County, accused luanyjang youth in Tonj East of carrying out the deadly
attack on government soldiers.
“They were attacked by suspected armed youth believed to
have come from Luacjang community of Tonj East, killing 10 soldiers,” Kucdit
told Mingkaman FM on Wednesday.
Among the deceased is the 1st. Lt Chan Wek from Division
12.
None of the traders was harmed because, he said, the
attackers targeted the two military pickups carrying the soldiers.
The two wounded soldiers are receiving medication at a
health facility in Rumbek North County.
