A Catholic priest has been detained at Nyamlel in Aweil West County, Northern Bahr el Gazal State, after he allegedly sodomized an 11-year-old boy.

Klintus Kurud, 31, head of Nyamlel Parish, is said to be the sponsor of the minor – a pupil at St. Daniel Comboni Primary School.

He reportedly met with the unnamed boy at the church sometimes in 2023 and later developed a close relationship.

According to the police in Nyamel, the accused church leader was caught red-handed on Thursday morning.

“One of the learners caught the priest in the act and reported the matter to one of the teachers,” Lt.-Col. Philip Agany told Akol Yam on Friday.

“However, the teacher did not act on it immediately. And so, the learner went further and reported the matter to the colleagues, sparking attack on the priests at the compound, leaving one of them injured.”

This, Agany disclosed, led to the indefinite closure of the school to allow the police to carry out an investigation into the matter.

The survivor was referred to Aweil Civil Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The Indian national is being held in accordance with Article 248 in the South Sudan Penal Code 2008.

It stipulates whoever has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any person and whoever allows any person to have such intercourse with him or her commits an offense.

“And upon conviction shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years and may also be liable for fine,” it reads.
