Aweil West detains suspect accused of molesting minor

Police in Aweil West County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, are holding a 24-year-old man accused of molesting an underage girl.

The arrest was made on Monday after the incident happened in Nyamlel town on Sunday night.

According to the head of Nyamlel police, Akok Nyang Akok, the suspect, only identified as Wol, has admitted to committing the crime.

Nyang appealed to the family of the 14-year-old girl to allow the concerned government institutions to address the matter.

“Let’s follow the legal procedures, though the crime is serious because justice will be rendered, especially now that the suspect is under police custody,” he told Akol Yam FM on Tuesday.

Nyang added that the suspect would be taken to court after investigation to defend himself against the charges labeled against him.

Section 247/2 of the Penal Code provides that a man or woman below eighteen cannot make a reasonable decision.

It stipulates that anyone guilty of such an offense is liable to a jail term of 10 years and a fine.

Lual also advised parents always to take good care of their underage children to prevent sexual abuse.
