Another priest shot dead in Torit town

A 65-year-old cleric has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Torit town of Eastern Equatoria state.

The deceased has only been identified as Reverend Godfrey of the Torit Presbyterian Church.

He was reportedly gunned down on Tuesday night in his compound in the Hai-Inkas residential area. No suspect has been identified or arrested.

“He was shot while eating food in his home. The pastor has no fight or quarrel with anyone, he is an old man, but the criminals just came and climbed the fence and started shooting at him,” said Joseph Oswaha, Mayor of Torit Municipality Council.

Witnesses told authorities that only one of the assailants had a gun.

“The security personnel are searching for the criminals who did this. The public must refrain from the acts of killing,” Mayor Oswaha added.

This is the second time a religious leader has been killed in Torit town. Last year, a pastor of the Africa Inland Church was shot dead in his residence under similar unclear circumstances.
