Angelina Teny appointed interior minister

President Salva Kiir has appointed Angelina Teny new minister of Interior through a republican decree read out on SSBC television on Tuesday.

In a separate decree, Kiir relieved deputy interior minster Peter Puok Koang and replaced him with Marial Gumke.

In March 2023, Kiir relieved Angelina through a republican decree and swapped the ministries of defense and interior – a move the SPLM-IO said it was unilateral and a violation of the peace agreement.

In addition, the SPLM-IO political bureau urged the president to revoke the decree and reinstate Angelina, who is also wife to Dr Machar.

Three months later, UNMISS Chief Nicholas Haysom told the UN Security Council that the peace principals – President Salva Kiir and Dr Riek Machar – had resolved the matter.

Responding to Haysom’s statement, the press secretary in the office of Dr Machar refuted the claim, terming it a false statement from the regional body.

However, the appointment of Ms Angelina to the Ministry of Interior seems to prove Haysom right.
