8 suspects arrested over burning and killing of a teacher in NBG

Police in Northern Bahr El Ghazal state have arrested eight suspects over the gruesome killing of a 24-year-old teacher on July 23, 2021.

The victim, Deng Deng Akuei was reportedly attacked and burnt to death by armed men who were said to be putting on military uniforms.

The incident happened in the evening in Yar-achot village along Warawar-Baach Payam road of Aweil East County.

Witnesses said the deceased was coming from Zion Primary School in Majak Akoon when he met his attackers on the way to his house. He was reportedly hit on the neck and torched.

Deng Akuei died while being rushed to Wanyjok health center.

Captain Gout Guot Akol,  the State Police spokesperson told Akol Yam that security personnel arrested eight suspects over the weekend.

Guot says some among the detained people are soldiers and investigation are going on at Aweil central police.

“Some of the suspects are soldiers. The police is conducting investigations to find out whether all the suspects will go to a civilian court or the soldiers will be sent to military court,” he stated.

Captain Guot disclosed that some of the suspects were apprehended in Aweil East County and others at the state capital, Aweil.

“We are yet to get the real cause for the killing, but I want to assure the public that the suspects have been arrested and legal procedures will be followed,” he added.

Last week, there was heavy deployment of police in Aweil town following reports that there would be a riot over the killing of Deng Deng. The family was, however, urged to remain calm and allow the government to handle the matter.

There have been reports of gang-related attacks during the night in Aweil town in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.
