5 children die of severe acute malnutrition in Gogrial West

More than five children have reportedly died of severe malnutrition and 75 others are suffering severe acute malnutrition in Gogrial West, Warrap State.

William Akot, county health director, said some of the five children died last week while others succumbed to the illness this week.

William said the children suffering from malnutrition are below the age of five and are returnees at Kotal camp near Kwajok town.

“Those children were reported by our health team on the ground. They found that most of them are suffering from hunger at the transit centers where they have been waiting to be transferred to their places of origin,” he stated.

He disclosed that malnutrition case among the children is unpreventable because of hunger facing retunes.

Meanwhile, Warrap State RRC Chairperson Benjamin Anyar explained that the World Food Program (WFP) is on the ground for assessment.

“All the NGO partners have seen the death of children. So, there is humanitarian support to them but it is not enough because of population; there are about 50,000 retunes in Kotal,” he added.
