30 killed, over 30 injured in a Warrap military base attack

Authorities in Twic County, Warrap state says 30 people have been killed and over 30 others sustained injuries in an attack at a military base at Ayuok on Monday dawn.

Officials said unidentified attackers targeted the barracks, catching the community and the army off guard in the early hours on Monday.

Hon. Simon Aguek Chan, the commissioner of Twic county, Warrap state says among those killed include an area military commander.

“The South Sudan People Defense Force deployed in Ayuok have been attacked this morning by suspected armed men from Abyei,” he told Mayardit FM.

He says suspects the armed men to have come from Abyei after they were repulsed and ran toward Abyei administrative area, a claim this media outlet cannot independently verify.

He added that those injured have been rushed to Médecins Sans Frontières hospital in Mayen Abun and Mother Teresa hospital where they are receiving treatment.

He says the causality count may rise, emphasizing that children and women were also among the victims.

Mayardit FM contacted multiple military officials from SSPDF Division III, which has the forces that were deployed. They acknowledged the incident but declined to comment.
