10 cows die from suspected east coast fever in Aweil West

An unconfirmed disease has reportedly killed at least 10 cows in Aweil West County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

According to Luka Manut Jel, Director General in the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, the symptoms reported by the cattle owners are similar to that of East Coast Fever.

East Coast fever, also known as theileriosis, is a disease of cattle, which causes infected animals to develop enlarged lymph glands, become listless, stop feeding, and cough frequently.

Mr. Manut said a team has been sent to the cattle camps to investigate the actual cause of animal deaths.

“Up to now we don’t have that clear information that we can give until the team investigates. The 10 dead cows reported are from Achana and Jurboc of Aweil West County,” he mentioned.

The DG said once the disease is detected, a vaccination exercise will commence in the cattle camps.
